Hi parents.

This is the homework blog page used by Mr. Gelder, your daughter's/son's FSF2D1 (grade 10 French) teacher. I will try and share as much information here as possible.

For the first week, we will be doing review work from grade nine, as well as some other diagnostic activities (reading, listening, etc.). We will dive into the grade 10 curriculum work some time next week and distribute textbooks, etc.

We try to deliver as much of the course as possible in French, which means I will be speaking almost exclusively French to students while in class. This may seem daunting to some, but it is indeed the best way for a language learner to learn the language; replicating the "immersion" experience as much as practicable and possible.

In the mean time, please feel free to contact me any time at the particulars over on the side of the screen over any matter.

Excited about the new school year.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-48794319546148097912018-03-28T10:33:00.001-04:002018-03-28T10:33:47.377-04:00Course checklists

Parents:

Have a look at the image above, which contains all of the assessments currently due or past due in FSF1D1 (grade 9 French). Has your son or daughter completed all of them?

This checklist (or Liste de rappels) is always available to students in the Hub and provides them with a convenient way to ensure they are on top of assignments that are due.

Currently, the class has just been assigned a culminating task for our brief unit on movie monsters that introduced them to the "Dr. and Mrs. Vandertramp" verbs you might remember from your own study of the language. It involves the writing of a 100 - 150 word paragraph, in the past tense, of the day in the life of a movie monster or one they make up themselves. The written work is then transferred onto an iPad app called "Explain Everything", has images added and then a voice - recording of the paragraph. The project is then converted to video and then uploaded to the course drop box, via hwdsb.tv (a much simpler process than this sentence makes it to be!).

Ideally, the work is handed in on or before Wednesday, April 4th. There is class time on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, in addition to a four-day weekend for students to do a little bit of homework on this.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-41387380459693866062018-03-20T08:55:00.003-04:002018-03-20T08:59:36.561-04:00Parent-Teacher interviews this Thursday, March 22nd

Good morning. I hope you enjoyed March Break insofar as you were able to (perhaps you didn't have a week off, like your son/daughter).

Currently, the grade nine French classes are finishing up the recording/presentation of their dialogue assignments for the Cris et frissons unit, in an effort to build confidence and profiency in oral language skills. We then move on to the ever-fun monster movie unit, and an indtroductio to our favourite topic, "Dr. and Mrs. Vandertramp" verbs (you remember those from high school French, right?).

Parent-teacher interviews are scheduled to proceed this Tbursday, March 22nd from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A reminder that an on-line booking is necessary and there are only a few spots left, so act now! The on-line booking will close Wednesday evening at 11:00 p.m. (I believe). The site for an on-line booking is Parent-teacher interview booking site. There are instructions in the previous post, but simply make sure you have your student's six-digit student number in order to book.

Look forward to meeting many of you this Thursday.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-89796675486012931312018-03-06T15:16:00.002-05:002018-03-06T15:20:55.015-05:00March Break, Dialogues and Parent-Teacher InterviewsGood day parents of FSF1D1 students! We are almost at March Break where we all get a well-deserved rest, students, teachers and parents.

The class is currently working on a dialogue assignment for the Cris et frissons unit. The topic is Qui est le coupable and deals with storyline in one of our units. Groups of three will be preparing and presenting a dialogue about the final scene where the police inspector confronts the guilty party in a bank heist/cyber-crime. Although preparations will be made in advance of the March Break, most will likely be presented in the first days coming back.

Speaking of the week back after March Break, it will be time for parent-teacher interviews. Hopefully, you will see an interim report card which will be sent home Friday, March 9th. That report card will not have an actual mark, but one of three indications; that your student is either "Progressing with difficulty", "Progressing well” or "Progressing very well". A vast majority of students will fall into the middle category. In addition, there will be some general comments and a current snapshot of student learning skills.

The interviews themselves will take place Thursday, March 22nd from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Appointments must be made on-line at http://dvss.parentinterview.com Instructions for booking an appointment are right here below. Ignore the dates; the site will open for bookings on Saturday, March 10th:

If your son/daughter has not yet submitted his/her options for next year (make sure they take grade 10 French), our school's guidance department would be grateful if it could be done tout de suite.

The option sheet can be accessed via "Career Cruising” under the students "Guidance” course in the HUB. To make it easier, I have created a link in the News section in the FSF1D1-24 French course in the HUB.

If you have any questions, concerns or difficulty, please do not hesitate to contact me or the school via the particulars under my pretty face to the right.

Friday is one of those days I am absent (also next Tuesday and Wednesday, February 27 and 28).

Friday's assignment is a reading one from the anthologie. We have a spent a good deal of time preparing for a brief introductory interview involving expressions of activity, adjectives and daily routine. We have some work to do with oral skills, particularly in thea area of confidence, but literacy is another important aspect of French.

Students are to read a short story called Le Tunnel de la peur in their Anthologies, pp. 16 -19. Instead of answering questions from the book, there is an on-line quiz linked in the news section.

Interim reports are coming up and you should ask your son/daughter if they have submitted ALL of the following reading and writing assessments to the drop box:

1. Une journée à mon goût;
2. L'Exploitation des enfants;
3. Quiz - Les verbes pronominaux;
4. Le Tunnel de la peur (outlined herein).

The interim reports will be going home just before March Break and will have one of three marks:

Progressing with difficulty;
Progressing well;
Progressing very well

A large majority of students will likely be in that middle category, which is where they should be. I have a personally very high threshold for "Progressing very well" that few students will achieve.

I will also be forwarding information about parent-teacher interview scheduling. I understand that interviews are scheduled for Thursday, March 22nd from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-86451500980711063692018-02-20T12:43:00.001-05:002018-02-20T12:43:48.091-05:00First oral interviews and a string of absences

Good day parents and families of FSF1D1 students! It has been too long, and I know I am already breaching my pledge to keep you frequently updated.

We are working through the first unit of the course, Moi-même.com and we will be doing our first mini-culminating activity this week. It is an oral interview, using the three language conventions learned during the course of the first couple of weeks: irregular adjectives, reflexive verbs and expressions of activity. This exercise will give students the chance to express themselves orally about a topic they know best; themselves. What we are looking at working towards is a confidence level in spontaneous oral fluency. Granted, the exercise isn't entirely spontaneous as there will be some advance preparation, students are encourged to converse with the interviewer (ie. me) rather than merely read from a prepared script.

Ultimately, we want students to be orally proficient in French, a tall order even for someone going through to grade 12. To this end, we encourage students once they hit grade twelve to challenge the DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française), which is a test given by the government of France that certifies students at levels of proficiency in the French language. It is a great thing to earn going forward into post-secondary studies and into the workforce.

I must also apologize in advance for absences occurring Friday, February 23rd, Tuesday, February 27 and Wednesday, February 28, as I will be at various school sporting events (Indoor track and field and OFSAA swimming). Work will be left for students, available on the HUB.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-58589158857260737122018-02-07T15:01:00.002-05:002018-02-07T15:04:42.745-05:00

Good morning students and paernts of grade nine DVSS French and happy new semester! It's going to rock.

This is where I hope to post frequent updates about assignments and other important information pertaining to your daughter's/son's afternoon class in grade 9 academic French (FSF1D1). My hope to is to post an update at least twice a week, but I am counting on you to keep me accountable. If I ignore/neglect this space for longer than a week, let me know with an indignant e-mail to: E-mail Mr. Gelder indignantly to remind him to update his homework blog. This page will be exclusviely in English, but our hope is to have students interacting to the greatest extent possible à la langue française. As such, other platforms (such as the Hub/D2L) will be entirely in French.

Grade nine French will cover the entire breadth of the FSL (French as a second language) curriculum, including reading, writing and oral communication; consisting of speaking and listening. A specific emphasis will be placed on oral language skills as there is little point to learning a language if one is not able to use it in every day interactions. Further, we aim to prepare students, by the time they are in grade 12, to challenge the DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française), a test administered by the government of France that certifies students at varying levels in the French language. Along the way, we hope to have a lot of fun.

Oh, and we WILL use the iPads so please ensure your student brings hers/his every day, charged as much as can be!

Should you have any questions in the interim, don't hesitate to contact me at the particulars above and to the right (underneath my smiling face).

First, let me apologize for having immediately broken my promise to have frequent recourse to this page. We are communicating with students through so many digital platforms that it is sometimes difficult to stay on top of them all.

Parent Teacher Interview night is fast approaching (Thursday, October 26th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.). I would look forward to meeting as many of you as the schedule will allow; there are 12 slots available and they tend to book up fast. Hello and welcome to another school year! A busy semester, to say the least with a grade nine applied class (FSF1P1-11) and a STACKED grade 11 and grade 12 university section (FSF3U1-12 and FSF4U1-12).

This space is what is called my homework blog; it is intended for communication with parents primarily, but also students. I would encourage you to subscribe, as I hope to update frequently. Also, it will be written entirely in English - the only time students will actually see English in their digital experience in French class.

Students are off to a good start. They are actively engaging in their learning using digital tools, such as the HUB, Google Docs and HWDSB.tv. We will continue to engage in this type of 21st century learning towards making our students better speakers, listeners, readers and writers of the French language.

An important bit of news for grade nine students: iPads will be distributed this week. Forms will be going home on Tuesday and it is critical that they come back, signed, right away. Startup for grade nines is busy, as we are engaged in transferring computer accounts from their middle schools so that the digital tools the HWDSB is fortunate to have can be enjoyed in full. Please ensure that these forms make it back to the school either Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

In the mean time, communication lines are always open. Have a look at the top right hand corner of the screen for contact information if you wish to get a hold of me.

Let's have a great semester in French!Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-65935717859219833072017-03-23T14:19:00.001-04:002017-03-23T14:19:32.948-04:00Parent-teacher interviews

Grade nines are working with irregular adjectives, reflexive verbs and expressions of activity to introduce a partner. Many groups have chosen to engage with digital tools in the spirit of TLE (Transforming Learning Everywhere) and are recording their interviews using their iPads and uploading them to the HUB via the Board's video hosting site, called HWDSB.tv. Exciting times.

Grade 11s are employing the futur anterior as well as the imperative with pronouns to put on a fictitious visit to a travel agency.

Next week, preliminary reports will be prepared and going home (I believe) in advance of March Break. Unlike the mid-semster report and the final report card, these reports will not have a percentage mark but will indicate only whether the student is "Progressing Very Well", "Progressing Well" or "Progressing with Difficulty".

Shortly thereafter, you will be able to go on line to book a parent-teacher interview which will happen on a date I will post here very soon.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-30921074638703242692017-02-22T10:00:00.002-05:002017-02-22T10:02:45.601-05:00Explore program

Hey parents of grade 11 FSF3U1 students! I would like to make you aware of an amazing opportunity this summer for your son/daughter to learn French more intensely than they ever could in a core French classroom.

"Explore" is a five-week program where students live and study French in Quebec (or New Brunswick), usually in a setting where English simply isn't an option. It really is the best (and ultimately ony) way to master a second language.

One of the best parts of this program is that it is entirely paid for by a federal-provincial subsidy, which includes tuition, room and board either in a college/university/CEGEP residence or a private home.

The program runs in the summer for all of July and early August. I am linking the program's website below. Application is on-line, but the deadline is approaching; March 6th.

Please consider encouraging your language-learner to take advantage of this outstanding program. If you have any questions, I would be more than happy to answer them as both a French teacher and alumnus of the program.

Good evening and Happy Valentine's Day to everyone.

We are off to a great start this semester and we have completed some preliminsary diagnostic testing. Students are where they are expected to be and, in many cases, beyond. This is a credit to the feeder school French teachers at SWO, Dundas Central, Spencer Valley, Dr. John Seaton and Lee Academy.

I do need to advise you of a current situation here at the school, however. As of the beginning of the semester, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board found itself short a number of qualified FSL (French-as-a-Second Language) teachers. As such, they have had to to outside of their supply/LTO teacher inventory to find qualified candidates. Long-term, this is great news as there will soon be a fresh batch of eager, young French teachers for the system.

The bad news, at least short term, is that we at DVSS are still short a teacher for the immediate period. I understand there has been a hiring, but human resources must do their due diligence before the teacher can start in the school. What this means for your son's/daughter's class is that I have been splitting my time between two sets of classes, spending two days with my own classes and two days with the ones that don't currently have a teacher assigned. On days I am not in either set of respective classes, there is a qualified supply teacher although not one who is necessarily FSL qualifiied.

We do apologize for this situation, but we hope to have a resolution to it once the human resources requirements are filled and the permanent classrom teacher is able to take up the post. Should you have any questions or concerns in the interim, please do not hesitate to contact either me (see the right-hand panel) or the school.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-84994320860138278812017-02-06T21:01:00.001-05:002017-02-06T21:13:26.204-05:00Good day and welcome to semester two!

Hello and welcome to semester two. If you are reading this you are either a student or parent of a student in FSF1D1-23 (Grade 9 academic) or FSF3U1-22 (Grade 11 university) French with Monsieur Gelder. Lucky you!

This is the place where I will be posting announcements regarding homework and other class related information. It is intended primarily for parents, as students should continue to consult the Hub as their primary source for class information.

We will leveraging many digital tools (that's Board-speak for using cool techie stuff) to enhance the French as a second language course. This is why devices, properly used, are WELCOME in class. Grade nine students have all been issued iPads by the Board and these should be brought every day to class, charged.

On this page, you can see the announcement feed (what you are reading right now) as well as the school announcements video scroll just to the right. Also along the side you will also note the feeds for another App. we use to communicate with students, "Remind". This allows the teacher to send SMS (ie. text) messages directly to student phones for the purposes of quick communication. Whatever is sent to students is visible on this page.

Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me, Monsieur Gelder, via the information on the sidebar of this page.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-85465615058105435792017-01-25T14:46:00.000-05:002017-01-25T14:46:11.536-05:00FSF1D1 students, please refer to the HubParents:

Please refer your daughter/son to the HUB, FSF1D1 course for two practice listening exercises, as well as to the reading they should do in advance of the exam, "La chanson des lutins" in Sans frontières: Anthologie", pp. 49 - 52.

A reminder that the FSF1D1 (grade nine academic French) exam is Tuesday, January 31st at 8:30 a.m. in room 1015.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-73381029416855572252017-01-24T10:29:00.003-05:002017-01-24T10:29:50.326-05:00Readings for the examA reminder that the final exam for FSF1P1 (grade nine applied French) is Friday, January 27th at 8:30 a.m. in room 1037 and for FSF1D1 (grade nine academic French) is Tuesday, January 31st in room 1015.

Here are the readings for the FSF1P1 exam. Good morning. I hope you and your families enjoyed the somewhat unexpected snow day on Tuesday.

Monday was a bit of a cheesey affair. I hope it was enjoyed by all.

We are pretty much finished the instructional aspect of the course and have only the course culminating activity and final exam left. Please ensure your son/daughter comes to school every day with a fully charged iPad, as we will be harnessing digital tools for the autobiographical presentation (written and oral).

We hope to be finished by the last day of classes, next Wednesday, January 25th. The final exam for the period two FSF1P1 (applied) class is Friday, January 27th at 8:30, room 1037 while the exam for the period four FSF1D1 (acadeamic) class is Tuesday, January 31st, also at 8;30 a.m. in room 1015.

Again, the exam will consist of reading passages (to be given out in advance) with comprehension questions (and a few other questions involving comprehension of language structures learned in the course), as well as a series of listening exercises.

Students are encouraged to remain in class for the exam, rather than write in Resource, as any accomadations to which students are entitled can be easily given in the regular classroom, with the added bonus of the guaranteed presence of an actual French teacher.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9162591426022680672.post-69742040314933748622017-01-10T10:02:00.001-05:002017-01-10T10:05:36.638-05:00Exams and culminating activity

Final exams take place from Thursday, January 26th until Tuesday, January 31.Unless otherwise indicated, exams take place at 8:30 until 10:00 in the regular classroom:

Thursday, January 26th: Period one class

Friday, January 27th: Period two class (FSF1P1 for students in that class, room 1037)

Monday, January 30th: Period three class

Tuesday, January 31st, Period four class (FSF1D1 for students in that class, room 1015)

Once finished, students are free (and indeed encouraged) to return home to prepare for subsequent exams. A snow day over the course of exams will result in all ensuing exams being pushed back a day, ending on Wednesday, February 1st. As it stands, February 1st and Thursday, February 2nd are Professional Development days; students stay home. Semester two begins on Friday, February 3rd.

Although many students are entitled to write their exams in a "resource room" it is my strong recommendation that students stay in the regular classroom, where they will be receive any and all supports indicated on their respective IEPs, including any extra time required to finish the exam. Exams in the Languages department are generally open-book (and device) and in the case of Mr. Gelder's class will involved a reading they will receive well in advance.

As for culminating activities, there will be a hybrid written/oral assignment students will be completing with the aid of their iPads. They will have all of the week of January 16 - 20th to complete this assignment in class (and likely some time the following week). The culminating activity makes up 15% of the final mark, as does the final exam.
Good morning parents. Early this week, I will be endeavouring to mark the culminating activities students have submitted in FSF1D1 (prepared on "Explain Everything"and uploaded to the drop box). I will also have all other reading assessments caught up, as I will be preparing a mid-term report, complete with a percent mark.

If you need to, please ensure that your son/daughter is caught up with these assessments so as to maximize success in terms of that mid-term mark.

Reports will be issued next week (between November 21 and 25). Should you have any questions, please contact me via the information on the right hand side of this page.Monsieur Gelder à Dundashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09464154335412771763noreply@blogger.com0
